Friday Announcements:

REGISTRATION PACKETS: All returning students make sure you take those registration packets home to your parents. If you did not receive one, see your English teacher or Mrs. King in the front office. Packet return and picture day is April 26th & 27th.

THINK, PLAY, CREATE: Now that the Think, Play, Create Corner is up and running, the library will be hosting a monthly craft or art class for interested artsy Sultans. Our first class will be held from 2:15-3:15 on the first Thursday after Spring Break, April 27th and led by our very own Mrs. Rowland. She will be demonstrating and teacher the basics of the artistic writing style called Calligraphy. No previous experience is required, and supplies will be provided. Space is limited, so sign up today in the library. Only students who are signed up will be able to attend the class as supplies are limited.

ROBOTICS COMPETITION: Robotics’ Club is away at their Las Vegas competition. Watch the live stream online on the Santana Website and cheer on Santana. They are competing with 48 teams and some as far away as China, Germany, and Turkey.

GOWN GIVEAWAY: The El Cajon Library is hosting our annual Gown Giveaway, where we will have over 250 forma dresses to choose from. You can get one formal dress and a makeover, all for free. We can take appointments for Saturday, April 22nd from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Walk-ins are welcome on Sunday, April 23rd from 12-2:00 pm. This event is open to anyone in grades 9-12. CONGRATULATIONS to the Boys’ Volleyball Team for their wins over Patrick Henry and Steele Canyon this week. The Sultans were led by seniors Austin Cooksey, Johnny Tischer, Hunter Cox, Chance Cate and junior defensive specialist, Shane Kirk in the 2 victories this week. Come out and support your team this weekend as we play in the West Coast challenge at Valhalla.

LOST AND FOUND: Wednesday afternoon in the girls’ restroom next to Room 302, a ring was left behind. It is silver with an iridescent pearl set in the middle with 2 small diamonds on either side of the pearl. This ring has great sentimental value to the young lady who left it behind as it was a gift for her 18th birthday. Her grandmother bought it for her before she passed away. The owner of the ring is offering a cash reward to whoever turns the ring in at the front office. No questions asked.

Senior Corner:

PTSA SCHOLARHIP: If you are a senior and want to be considered for the PTSA Scholarship you must be a member of PTSA and have joined before April 8th. Membership forms can be picked up at the office and the cost of a regular membership is $10. PTSA will send an email to all current members when scholarship applications will be available and when the due date will be.

Friday Announcements

SKATEBOARDERS: After Spring Break Mrs. King will no longer be holding skateboards in her office. Get a skateboard lock and lock up your board at the back of the school.

WORK PERMITS: Spring Break is rapidly approaching. If you have a work permit application that needs to be processed, please turn it in to Ms. Bingham as soon as possible. There will be nobody on campus during Spring Break to process work permits.

TRAVEL CLUB: Only 6 days left before our adventure to beautiful Northern Spain for 11 days. It’s too late to sign up for this trip, but not for next year’s Germany, Austria and Switzerland trip. It promises to be a great trip. Spaces are filling up fast, so hurry and sign up before it’s too late. We will only take 30 travelers. For more information, talk to Mr. Martinez in room 705 ASAP.

ATTENTION AP SPANISH TEST TAKERS: The 12 for 12 party is almost here. All of you locos that took and passed the test last year, stop by Mr. Lelevier’s room at break or lunch today to get the details. Do not forget as you may get left behind.

CONGRATULATIONS: Santana Sultans would like to congratulate Sierra Simanek for making the All-East County Girls Basketball Team – First Team and congratulate Janice Deguerio and Kobie Holland for making All-East County Girls Basketball Team – 2nd team.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NICK BERHALTER. He made the All-East County Boys Basketball Team – 2nd Team.

THE PURPLE TENNIS NATION won impressively last night against Valhalla. In doubles, the teams of Bryce Chung/Jon Huson and Joey Wiseman/Zach Taft swept all 3 matches. In singles, Michael Danis won 2 of 3 to secure the victory. There will be no lunch meeting today. See you at practice boys.

CONGRATULATIONS to both Varsity and JV Boys Volleyball for league wins over Granite Hills and Helix this week. The Sultans led both games. Seniors Chance Cate had 38 kills, Austin Cooksey had 18 kills, and Johnny Tischer had 78 assists.

NEED A SUMMER JOB THAT STARTS IN THE SPRING? The YMCA is training and hiring lifeguards and swim instructors today. Bring a friend. For only $25 you can get certified and start working at your local Y – the Cameron YMCA in Santee, the Davis YMCA in La Mesa, or any of the Y locations countywide. If you’re interested, pick up a postcard in the front office.

T-SHIRT CONTEST: It’s that time again! PTSA is having their annual T-Shirt Contest. Design the new SHS PTSA Spirit Wear T-Shirt for the 2017-18 school year. All entries need to be in by Friday, April 7th. The winner will be announced when we return from Spring Break. Informational flyers are in the office. The winner will receive a $100 gift card. Show your Sultan pride and get creative.

WRESTLERS: The Wrestling team picture that will go in the yearbook will be taken today at the beginning of lunch in front of the wrestling room. Make sure you’re there as soon as possible or you won’t be in the photo.

BOYS GOLF: The Boys’ Golf Team is full of young talent. After a slow start to the season, the team has put in a lot of work and is starting to see the results. Marco Gonzalez, Kyle Olsen, Dustin Campbell, Ben Taft, and Nick DePhilippis have helped contribute to winning four of the last six matches. A big shout out goes to Joe Morgan who has medaled in 7 straight matches and looks to keep fighting to be Grossmont Valley’s Player of the Year. Keep swingin’ it boys.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Congratulations to Boys’ Volleyball for winning both league games this week over Grossmont and Valhalla! The Sultans were led by seniors Chance Cate with 29 kills, Hunter Cox with 33 kills, and Johnny Tischer with 76 assists over the course of 2 victories.

PURPLE TENNIS NATION: After 2 tough losses early in the week, the men of the Purple Tennis Nation bounced back with a nice win last night against West Hills. Bryce Chung and Jon Huson put up the top win totals for the week as they won 7 of their 9 matches. Go Sultans!

THINK, PLAY, CREATE: The Library’s Think, Play, Create Corner is now open. We have a variety of board games and card games that rely on luck and strategy, projects to create, and crafts to have fun. A special shout out to Mr. Santana and his 4th period students who helped get the lettering for the corner up and running. They turned out amazing. Stay tuned for details on our first monthly Creative Craft offered in April hosted in the library by our art teachers, Mrs. Rowland and Mrs. Elliott.

ATTENTION JUNIORS: If you ordered a class shirt, they will be in next week. If you missed your chance to buy a shirt, you can buy one from Mrs. Elliott in room 702. Limited supplies, so get them while you can.

POWDER PUFF: Attention Junior and Senior girls. Are you ready for some football? That’s right; Powder Puff is just around the corner. If you are a junior or senior girl and have an athletic clearance, you will be eligible to play for your class team. Don’t worry guys, we have a way for you to participate as well. We need junior and senior boys to shake their pompoms and cheer on their teams. So any juniors and seniors that want to participate, there is a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, March 22nd in room 702 at lunch. Again, this is a mandatory meeting.

ASVAB RESULTS: Congratulations to the 140 Santana students who successfully completed the ASVAB Career Exploration exam. Your results will be available Tuesday, March 21 during periods 1 and 2. If your last name falls between A-L report to room 803 period 1, M-Z report to room 803 period 2.

CONGRATULATIONS: The Santana Winterguard took first place in their class last Saturday at the Mira Mesa Winterguard Show. Way to go Sultans! If you would like to see them in action, they are performing March 19th at West Hills starting at 11:00 am. Tickets are $10.

SANTANA SOFTBALL beat University City 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the 7th. Shelby Holmquist led the inning off with a double and scored the winning run on a RBI single by Sydney Benjamin who also had two hits on the day.

2017 GIRLS EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE:
Saturday, April 1st at 8:00 am at the Hyatt Manchester. All girls are invited to attend this conference, no cost to any GUHSD student. Please look on the Santana website for more information. 

PI DAY: Want to throw a pie at a teacher? You can on Tuesday if you make a bid this week. It can cost as little as $2. Stop by the auction table at lunch in the large quad.

TREE DEDICATION: Today at lunch there will be a short ceremony by the Acts of Kindness Club dedicating our new “Kindness Tree” in front of the Science Building. This is our reminder for all to see that love is stronger than hate between you and me, being nice to someone is completely free. Join us as we celebrate the Kindness Tree. We hope to see you today at lunchtime.

MASTER CHEF CULINARY COMPETITION: Congratulations to the Santana team in the Master Chef Culinary Competition which earned 3rd place on Thursday. Way to go Sam Hunt, Brook Herwehe, Luke Horton, Autumn Fisher, and Serina Morales.

BOYS’ VOLLETBALL: Congratulations to the boys’ volleyball team for beating Hilltop 3 games to 1 this past Tuesday. Santana was led by seniors Hunter Cox with 12 kills and 7 blocks, Johnny Tischer’s 33 assists and Anthony Fornace with a career-high 20 digs. Come support your Santana Boys’ Volleyball team at their next game on Tuesday, March 14th against rival West Hills. The game is at 5:30 pm at West Hills so be sure to come out and represent that purple rain!

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL: Santana Softball beat La Costa Canyon on Thursday 4-2 on a two run home run by Mackenzie Bennett and RBI singles by Maddy Mendez and Rachel Wilson.

THE PURPLE TENNIS NATION is off to a strong start. Our boys won 3 of 4 since our last check in. Leading the way in singles play was freshman phenom Cole Hunter along with senior standouts Joey Wiseman and Michael Danis. In doubles, the team of senior Drew Cantin and freshman Joey Marquez is putting together a season to remember as they continue to win match after match. Keep it up boys and I’ll see you at lunch.

SWIM: Come out and support the swim team today at the pool as they take on cross town rival West Hills. Go Sultans.

DIVE TEAM: The Santana Sultan’s Diving Team has had a long history of victories, combined with being a ton of fun. In 2017 we have another great team, but still need a couple more boys to join in. If you are the kind of person that loves getting upside down and having a bunch of laughs, head on over to the pool after school and speak to the diving coach.

SWIM TEAM: Come out and support the swim team today at the pool as they take on Ramona. Dive will start at 3:30 and swim to follow at 4:30. Go Sultans!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Softball Team for beating High Tech High 11-0 with runs hit by Maddy Mendez, Mackenzie Bennett and Rachel Wilson. They open the home season today vs. El Capitan at 3:30.

ATTENTION JUNIORS! The Class of 2018 is offering their class t-shirt one last time. The shirts are white with a green sun that says “SHS Class of 2018”. Bring in a form and $13 to the finance office before the Friday, March 3rd. Get your t-shirts before it’s too late!

FUNDRAISER: Are you hungry? Do you like shiny things? Then head over to Chipotle and pick up a burrito today between 4-8:00 pm to support your Junior Class as they fundraise for next year’s Winter Formal. Pick up a flyer or snap a photo of one or get one from your teacher or in room 702. Show the flyer at purchase and Chipotle will give 50% back to the Junior Class.

CSF: All CSF applications for this semester are due at the beginning of lunch next Friday, March 3rd in room 208 to Mrs. Barelka. Don’t be late. You need 4 semesters’ membership to earn the gold seal on your diploma.

TRAVEL CLUB: We are nearly 40 days out before we head to Northern Spain for an 11-day trip of a lifetime. So, even though you may not be going, you can get information for our next great trip during Spring Break 2018. We will head to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It promises to be another awesome adventure. We have nearly 10 people already signed up. If you want more information, talk to Mr. Martinez in room 705.

GIRLS H2O POLO: Come out and support your Santana Girls Water Polo Team this Saturday, February 25th as they play for a CIF Championship! Game time is set for 12:15 pm at the beautiful Coggan Aquatic Center in La Jolla. Let’s greet he Canyon Crest Academy Ravens with a sea of purple and cheer our team towards the first title in school history!

THE MIGHTY PURPLE TENNIS NATION jumped out of the gates with a lopsided win against Granite Hills. The varsity men won 16 of 18 matches while our JV gang won 17 of 18. Great start gentlemen! We have lots of work ahead of us but your early effort is impressive. We are still inviting players onto the team. Be a part of something special! See you all at lunch!

ATTENTION SULTAN SCHOLARS! Judging from the rise in eating incidents in the library, your friendly library staff would like to remind everyone that the Library has not changed its name to “Jack in the Library” or “Check In and Out.” Please be respectful of our goal to keep the library clean and cockroach free. Remember, stay classy Sultans!

STUDENT CONFERENCE: The Student African American Sisterhood at San Diego State University is offering a women’s high school conference. The conference’s purpose is to empower, enrich, and evolve your women within the San Diego community and neighboring counties and to get them excited about college. The conference is Saturday, February 25, 2017 beginning at 11:00 am. Spacing is limited, so to RSVP go to www.sdsuwomensconference.weebly.com.

DO YOU NEED COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS? Santana National Little League has volunteer opportunities for high school students. This volunteer opportunity is to work in the concession stand helping serve cold and hot foods during games. The season starts April 25th and runs through early June. LAST GAME: Come out and cheer on the basketball team tonight as seniors, John Bobof, and Simone (Nemo) Maritano play in their final home game.

TRACK PRACTICE starts tomorrow at 8:00 am. If it is raining we will meet under the eaves by girls PE. You must be cleared to participate. Bring your clearance sheet with you.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS: Tryouts will be held this Saturday, February 18th from 10-12:00 noon in the gym and also on Monday, February 20th from 1-3:00.

BASEBALL MEETING: There is a baseball meeting in room 209 at the beginning of lunch today for anybody interested in trying out for baseball this year.

SOFTBALL TRYOUTS are cancelled for Saturday, February 18th. Tryouts will begin on Monday, February 20th at 3:00 pm on the softball field. Athletes should arrive at the field by 2:30 to check in.

SWIM: Due to the weather expected to come in later this afternoon, practice has been cancelled. Practice will resume on Tuesday at 5:30. There will also be a parent meeting on Tuesday at 5:30.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2016 AP SPANISH CLASS: Twelve brave test takers went in and challenged the exam and an amazing 12 passed. Congrats to Bryce Chung, Karen Cruz, Colton Gerry, Jon Huson, Gabi Gonzalez, Jackie Loje, Jennie Melton, Carlos Negrete, Kevin Rivas, Marcos Rosales, Amanda Stablein, and Diana Yactayo. BOYS TENNIS: The mighty Purple Tennis Nation kicks off its season this Monday at 8:00 am. Any and all boys looking to join our tennis family and learn a fun, yet very challenging game, should consider giving tennis a shot. We are especially looking for all interested Freshmen and Sophomores. No experience is necessary. We are meeting at lunch today in room 704 to go over all the season’s details. Friday Announcements:

PIZZA PIZZA: All students, please remember that you are not allowed to order pizza during the school day and have it delivered.  We will turn them away at the door.

SCHOOL PAPER: Don’t forget that our school newspaper is published every Friday night.  Go to www.santanaconsultant.com .  Keep up with your fellow peers and opinions on important topics, worldly news and what is going on in the community around you.

BOYS AND GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The girls’ JV basketball game has been cancelled.  The boys’ JV basketball game has been moved to 4:00 at Santana.

LACROSSE MEETING: There will be a girls’ lacrosse pre-season meeting on Friday, February 10th at 3:30 in the football stadium.  Tryouts are Saturday, February 18th from 8-11 a.m.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL: Attention boys’ volleyball players. If you are interested in playing this season, you must attend the meeting today during lunch in the gym.  Information regarding dates and times of tryouts will be distributed.

BOYS’ GOLF: Tryouts are right around the corner.  Your clearance paperwork is due to Mr. Kay in room 802 by next Friday.  If you have questions or need more information, stop by Mr. Kay’s room before it’s too late.

SWIM: Don’t forget, today is the last day to turn in apparel order forms to the finance office.  There will be a suit fitting today at 3:00 pm at the pool.  If you are intending to be on the swim team, you should attend the suit fitting.  If you forgot your order form or have any other questions, see Coach Rizzo in room 302.

BOYS’ TENNIS: The men's tennis season kicks off in 10 days. The very first practice will be Monday February 13th at 8am.  All interested players come see Coach Lelevier in room 704 for a schedule and all the details.  Hope to see you soon!

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL: There is a softball meeting today at lunch in room 304.  Anyone planning on trying out must attend.

PING PONG TOURNAMENT: The 1st annual Santana Winter Ping Pong Tourney is underway.  Today is open play so all those in the tourney come in and find your opponent and get a match in.  Next week we will play out the following schedule: Monday is the Olympic Division, Tuesday is for the Major League, and Wednesday is the Minors Circuit.  Good luck to all!
