Friday Announcements:

·       It’s the last chance to get your senior mugs!  Hurry to the finance office and buy yours before they are sold out.  They are only $20 and have all graduating seniors names listed.

·       Monday, June 5th is the deadline to turn in your summer school application.  All forms must be turned in to the front office by the end of the school day to be enrolled in summer school.  See your counselor if you have questions about what class to take.

·       From the Health Office – If you have any medication in the health office, please pick it up by the last day of school.  All medication will be thrown out if not picked up.

·       Congratulations to the following track athletes for their performance in the CIF finals:

Sierra Simanek – 5th place – shot put

Thomas Rusnak – 9th place – pole vault

Austin Ross – 7th place – 300 hurdles

Vincent Velletta – 4th place – 800 hurdles

FRIDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Attention seniors – Class of 2017 keepsake mugs are currently being sold in the finance office for only $20. These mugs have all graduating senior names and there is a limited supply. Hurry down and buy yours now.

Summer School applications are available in the front office and online on the Santana website. Get your application in ASAP as classes fill up fast. Summer School is June 12-June 30. Do not take an online summer school course if you plan to play sports in college as they do not meet the NCAA guidelines. See your counselor if you have any questions.

Cheerleading tryouts are next week! Registration is at 3:30 on Tuesday. You need athletic clearance, an application, teacher recommendations, and completed grade sheet. If you have any questions, ask Mrs. Field in room 106.

Santana’s ACE students presented their revitalization project of the Lakeside Rodeo to architecture, construction, and engineering professionals at San Diego State University this Saturday. All of the ACE participants worked tirelessly to complete their design to a professional standard throughout the course of this school year. Zachary Strange, Brandon Taing, Derek Cantor, Cole Stromberg, Andrew Pelowitz, Alejo Favero, and Colton Gerry were rewarded with $17,500 in scholarship monies by the ACE mentors. The ACE program is open to all students on campus. If you are interested in signing up for next year’s ACE project and perhaps being awarded some scholarship money of your own, then please see Mr. Kay in room 802 for more details.

From the Health Office: If you have any medication in the health office, please pick it up by the last day of school. ALL medication will be thrown out if not picked up.

Subway is offering special pricing on 6” and foot long sandwiches to all Sultan staff and students. Starting on the following days and all summer long, staff and students may purchase a $3 6” sub or a $6 foot long sub – Wednesdays starting May 24, Fridays staring May 26 and Mondays starting May 29. Students and staff must show school ID.

Travel Club – For next year’s Germany, Austria and Switzerland trip, there are approximately 10 spots left. So, if you want to go, sign up before summer so you don’t forget. If you need information or a flyer, go to room 705 and talk to Mr. Martinez.

Physicals for all students trying out for a sport next year will be held next Saturday, June 3rd in the dance room from 8:00 am and the cost is $25 cash. This physical will cover you for the entire year and will be the only one offered at Santana for the upcoming school year.

There will be a meeting at break today in the dance room for all track and cross country athletes.

Congratulations to the swim and dive team after a great performance at CIF. We had multiple swimmers make conciliation finals, including two more record breaking swims. Freshman Gavin Cheary set the new record for the boys’ 100 freestyle with a time of 48 seconds and Carina Balsley, Erica Mitchell, Shelby Johnson and Jazzlyn Hanson broke their own record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45. Go Sultans!

Santana Softball is going to the CIF Championships on Saturday at 4:30 @ USCD vs. Steele Canyon. The Sultans advanced with a 5-4 win against Del Norte. The game winning runs were scored on a two out single by Lakaila Aquiningoc and a RBI double by Sydney Benjamin. The winning pitcher was Madison Mendez.

Attention Girls’ Volleyball Players – If you are interested in playing you must attend the mandatory meeting today during lunch in room 308. Information regarding summer league and tryouts will be distributed.

Tennis anyone? The 2017-2018 Men’s and Women’s tennis teams are holding the last meeting before summer. Come get all the summer information and next year’s schedule today at lunch in room 704. All interested players, please attend as we will talk about getting cleared and summer programs. Learn to play a game that you can play forever and meet some new friends. See you today in Coach Lelevier’s room.

FRIDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS:

PARKING: Students, Please do not park in the staff parking lot. The only lot students should be parking in is the back lot by the gymnasium.

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS: Will the following seniors please pick up your graduation announcements from Mrs. King’s office: Juan-Carlos Garcia, Hunter Henson, Cody Jenkins, Allanah Lugo, Jacob Miranda, Dalton Seawood and Bobby Wallace.

LOST AND FOUND: For all of you who have lost items throughout the year, we will be setting up lost and found tables next Wednesday and Thursday at lunch and after school.

SPRING CONCERT: The Santana Music Department is holding their Spring Concert next Tuesday, May 23rd at 7:00 pm in the Santana Gym. Students and kids are free and adults are $5. There will be performance by our award winning Colorguard team, the Santana Band and the Santana Choir. We hope you can join us.

RETIREMENT CELEBRATION: On Friday, June 2nd, Mr. Johnson’s retirement celebration will take place in the gym at 5:30 p.m. Please join us for a night of singing, dancing and honoring Mr. Johnson.

LIBRARY REMINDERS: Two friendly library reminders from Mrs. Teschler and Mrs. Winslow. First, we still have openings for teams of two for our Scrabble Tournaments that will be held on Wednesday, May 31st starting at 2:15. Second, the year is winding down, so all library books are due by Tuesday, May 23rd. If you have any questions, please come and see us in the library.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Santana Gymnastics Team for their 1st place league final championship win last week. Today they are headed for La Costa Canyon High School to compete at CIF. Good luck gymnasts!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Santana Softball Team who beat Otay Ranch 6-2 in the first round of the CIF playoffs. The #1 seed Sultans were led by Rachel Wilson’s solo home run. The softball team returns to action at home this Saturday vs. Bishop’s. Also, a shout out to Ashley Madrigal for winning the KUSI play of the month with her catch in the Granite Hills game.

SENIOR SECTION:

GROSSMONT COLLEGE PARENT ORIENTATION: Seniors, if you are planning on attending Grossmont College, encourage your parents to come to the Parent Orientation on Wednesday, May 24th from 5:45-7:30 pm. Parents will learn more about the on boarding process, associate degree and certificate programs, counseling services, financial aid, university transfer options, and special student support programs. Complimentary dinner will be provided to parents.

ATTENTION ALL SULTAN WORDMANIACS! Announcing the first annual Scrabble Tournament! Testing will be over and AP exams a thing of the past, so get together with a friend and sign up for a fun afternoon of word building and strategy. Our tournament will be held on Wednesday the 31st in the library after school. Mr. Johnson will be helping run the event with Mrs. Teschler and Mrs. Winslow. There will be prizes for the top scoring teams and lots of fast, fun word play. There are plenty of Scrabble boards available in the Think, Play, Create Corner, so sign up your team in the library today and start practicing.

CONGRATULATIONS to Marilyn Romo Valdes for receiving an honorable mention for her photograph in the District Art Show last weekend. Way to go!

TRAVEL CLUB: Meeting today at lunch for all who are going on the Germany trip 2018 or those who would like to go. It will be short but very informational in room 705.

CONGRATULATIONS to boys volleyball for their first round CIF victory over Castle Park this past Wednesday. The Sultans were led by seniors Chance Cate with 22 kills, Johnny Tischer with 45 assists, and Jacob Robertson with 31 digs. Come support your boy’s volleyball team as they play at Sage Creek High School this Saturday at 5:00 pm in the CIF quarterfinals.

BEST OF LUCK to the Santana divers who are competing at the CIF Springboard Diving Championships today. One again, the Sultans have qualified more divers than any other school in the county. Competing today are Annie Auer, Kimberly Murphy, Dylan Elbik, Noelle Abrantes, Anson Rasmusson, and our team captain, Mimi Williams. Go Sultans!

INFORMATIONAL COLLEGE SEMINAR: Attention all students considering college after high school – AVID Club is hosting an informational seminar to help navigate this system of college applications, financial aid and NCAA Clearance. The cost is $15 per family and will come with a packet of useful information. Hope to see you on May 9th. RSVP to Mrs. Erpelding in room 313 if you will be attending.

NATIONAL ANTHEM AUDITIONS: If you are a senior and would like to audition to sing the National Anthem at Graduation or at Senior Awards, please come by and see Ms. Bingham to sign up. Auditions will take place on Thursday, May 11, during lunch in the gymnasium.

THIS FUNDRAISER TASTES LIKE CHICKEN! Head to Wings N’ Things in Santee on Wednesday from 12-9 pm to support the Class of 2019! Come out, have some wings, and help fundraise while you’re at it!

CONGRATULATIONS to the swim team for bringing home another consecutive league title. Both the boys and girls went undefeated this season and look to carry this momentum into CIF next week. A special shout-out to Carina Balsley, Jazzy Hanson, Erica Mitchell, and Shelby Johnston for setting the new Santana record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.27. Go Sultans!

Friday Announcements:

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JV PURPLE TENNIS NATION. Our boys did very well in the Grossmont League Tourney. In the doubles championships we had 2 Santana teams playing each other for the title. Emanuel Corona and Trevor Kerkman went 6-0 during the 2 day event to win 1st place while Cole Stromberg and Nick Lane finished in 2nd after losing only 1 of their 6 matches. Spencer Ikeda and Jason Freund were our top performers in singles; both going 5-3 over the 2 days. There is no match today gentlemen. Varsity practice starts at 3:30. See you then!

Friday Announcements:

REGISTRATION PACKETS: All returning students make sure you take those registration packets home to your parents. If you did not receive one, see your English teacher or Mrs. King in the front office. Packet return and picture day is April 26th & 27th.

THINK, PLAY, CREATE: Now that the Think, Play, Create Corner is up and running, the library will be hosting a monthly craft or art class for interested artsy Sultans. Our first class will be held from 2:15-3:15 on the first Thursday after Spring Break, April 27th and led by our very own Mrs. Rowland. She will be demonstrating and teacher the basics of the artistic writing style called Calligraphy. No previous experience is required, and supplies will be provided. Space is limited, so sign up today in the library. Only students who are signed up will be able to attend the class as supplies are limited.

ROBOTICS COMPETITION: Robotics’ Club is away at their Las Vegas competition. Watch the live stream online on the Santana Website and cheer on Santana. They are competing with 48 teams and some as far away as China, Germany, and Turkey.

GOWN GIVEAWAY: The El Cajon Library is hosting our annual Gown Giveaway, where we will have over 250 forma dresses to choose from. You can get one formal dress and a makeover, all for free. We can take appointments for Saturday, April 22nd from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Walk-ins are welcome on Sunday, April 23rd from 12-2:00 pm. This event is open to anyone in grades 9-12. CONGRATULATIONS to the Boys’ Volleyball Team for their wins over Patrick Henry and Steele Canyon this week. The Sultans were led by seniors Austin Cooksey, Johnny Tischer, Hunter Cox, Chance Cate and junior defensive specialist, Shane Kirk in the 2 victories this week. Come out and support your team this weekend as we play in the West Coast challenge at Valhalla.

LOST AND FOUND: Wednesday afternoon in the girls’ restroom next to Room 302, a ring was left behind. It is silver with an iridescent pearl set in the middle with 2 small diamonds on either side of the pearl. This ring has great sentimental value to the young lady who left it behind as it was a gift for her 18th birthday. Her grandmother bought it for her before she passed away. The owner of the ring is offering a cash reward to whoever turns the ring in at the front office. No questions asked.

Senior Corner:

PTSA SCHOLARHIP: If you are a senior and want to be considered for the PTSA Scholarship you must be a member of PTSA and have joined before April 8th. Membership forms can be picked up at the office and the cost of a regular membership is $10. PTSA will send an email to all current members when scholarship applications will be available and when the due date will be.

Friday Announcements 

ALL RETURNING STUDENTS: Make sure you take those registration packets home to your parents. If you did not receive one, see your English teacher or Mrs. King in the front office. Packet return and picture day is April 26th & 27th.

SKATEBOARDERS: After Spring Break Mrs. King will no longer be holding skateboards in her office. Get a skateboard lock and lock up your board at the back of the school.

WORK PERMITS: Spring Break is rapidly approaching. If you have a work permit application that needs to be processed, please turn it in to Ms. Bingham as soon as possible. There will be nobody on campus during Spring Break to process work permits.

TRAVEL CLUB: Only 6 days left before our adventure to beautiful Northern Spain for 11 days. It’s too late to sign up for this trip, but not for next year’s Germany, Austria and Switzerland trip. It promises to be a great trip. Spaces are filling up fast, so hurry and sign up before it’s too late. We will only take 30 travelers. For more information, talk to Mr. Martinez in room 705 ASAP.

ATTENTION AP SPANISH TEST TAKERS: The 12 for 12 party is almost here. All of you locos that took and passed the test last year, stop by Mr. Lelevier’s room at break or lunch today to get the details. Do not forget as you may get left behind.

CONGRATULATIONS: Santana Sultans would like to congratulate Sierra Simanek for making the All-East County Girls Basketball Team – First Team and congratulate Janice Deguerio and Kobie Holland for making All-East County Girls Basketball Team – 2nd team.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NICK BERHALTER. He made the All-East County Boys Basketball Team – 2nd Team.

THE PURPLE TENNIS NATION won impressively last night against Valhalla. In doubles, the teams of Bryce Chung/Jon Huson and Joey Wiseman/Zach Taft swept all 3 matches. In singles, Michael Danis won 2 of 3 to secure the victory. There will be no lunch meeting today. See you at practice boys.

CONGRATULATIONS to both Varsity and JV Boys Volleyball for league wins over Granite Hills and Helix this week. The Sultans led both games. Seniors Chance Cate had 38 kills, Austin Cooksey had 18 kills, and Johnny Tischer had 78 assists.

Senior Corner:

PTSA SCHOLARHIP: If you are a senior and want to be considered for the PTSA Scholarship you must be a member of PTSA and have joined before April 8th. Membership forms can be picked up at the office and the cost of a regular membership is $10. PTSA will send an email to all current members when scholarship applications will be available and when the due date will be.

JACK MASHIN SCHOLARSHIP: Seniors, do you have leadership skills and excellent sportsmanship? If you answered yes, you could get $7500 for college for all that you have done for Santana. See Mrs. Spenny for the Jack Mashin Scholarship application. Applications are due to Mrs. Spenny by April 6th. See the scholarship website or Google classroom for more information.

NEED A SUMMER JOB THAT STARTS IN THE SPRING? The YMCA is training and hiring lifeguards and swim instructors today. Bring a friend. For only $25 you can get certified and start working at your local Y – the Cameron YMCA in Santee, the Davis YMCA in La Mesa, or any of the Y locations countywide. If you’re interested, pick up a postcard in the front office.

T-SHIRT CONTEST: It’s that time again! PTSA is having their annual T-Shirt Contest. Design the new SHS PTSA Spirit Wear T-Shirt for the 2017-18 school year. All entries need to be in by Friday, April 7th. The winner will be announced when we return from Spring Break. Informational flyers are in the office. The winner will receive a $100 gift card. Show your Sultan pride and get creative.

SCHOOL PAPER: Hey there Sultans! Don’t forget about our school newspaper online. Go to www.santanaconsultant.com . We publish every Friday night. Keep up with your fellow peers and opinions on important topics, worldly news, and what is going on in the community around you.

WRESTLERS: The Wrestling team picture that will go in the yearbook will be taken today at the beginning of lunch in front of the wrestling room. Make sure you’re there as soon as possible or you won’t be in the photo.

BOYS GOLF: The Boys’ Golf Team is full of young talent. After a slow start to the season, the team has put in a lot of work and is starting to see the results. Marco Gonzalez, Kyle Olsen, Dustin Campbell, Ben Taft, and Nick DePhilippis have helped contribute to winning four of the last six matches. A big shout out goes to Joe Morgan who has medaled in 7 straight matches and looks to keep fighting to be Grossmont Valley’s Player of the Year. Keep swingin’ it boys.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Congratulations to Boys’ Volleyball for winning both league games this week over Grossmont and Valhalla! The Sultans were led by seniors Chance Cate with 29 kills, Hunter Cox with 33 kills, and Johnny Tischer with 76 assists over the course of 2 victories.

PURPLE TENNIS NATION: After 2 tough losses early in the week, the men of the Purple Tennis Nation bounced back with a nice win last night against West Hills. Bryce Chung and Jon Huson put up the top win totals for the week as they won 7 of their 9 matches. Go Sultans!

Announcements:

THINK, PLAY, CREATE: The Library’s Think, Play, Create Corner is now open. We have a variety of board games and card games that rely on luck and strategy, projects to create, and crafts to have fun. A special shout out to Mr. Santana and his 4th period students who helped get the lettering for the corner up and running. They turned out amazing. Stay tuned for details on our first monthly Creative Craft offered in April hosted in the library by our art teachers, Mrs. Rowland and Mrs. Elliott.

ATTENTION JUNIORS: If you ordered a class shirt, they will be in next week. If you missed your chance to buy a shirt, you can buy one from Mrs. Elliott in room 702. Limited supplies, so get them while you can.

POWDER PUFF: Attention Junior and Senior girls. Are you ready for some football? That’s right; Powder Puff is just around the corner. If you are a junior or senior girl and have an athletic clearance, you will be eligible to play for your class team. Don’t worry guys, we have a way for you to participate as well. We need junior and senior boys to shake their pompoms and cheer on their teams. So any juniors and seniors that want to participate, there is a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, March 22nd in room 702 at lunch. Again, this is a mandatory meeting.

ASVAB RESULTS: Congratulations to the 140 Santana students who successfully completed the ASVAB Career Exploration exam. Your results will be available Tuesday, March 21 during periods 1 and 2. If your last name falls between A-L report to room 803 period 1, M-Z report to room 803 period 2.

CONGRATULATIONS: The Santana Winterguard took first place in their class last Saturday at the Mira Mesa Winterguard Show. Way to go Sultans! If you would like to see them in action, they are performing March 19th at West Hills starting at 11:00 am. Tickets are $10.

SANTANA SOFTBALL beat University City 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the 7th. Shelby Holmquist led the inning off with a double and scored the winning run on a RBI single by Sydney Benjamin who also had two hits on the day.
